Treating Disc Injuries

|

One of the most effective tools for treating injuries of the spine (including herniated or bulging discs) is spinal decompression therapy.

Spinal Decompression is an FDA approved therapy for the treatment of disc herniation and disc bulges. It’s a safe alternative to spinal fusion surgery and has been used for years to help chronic pain sufferers find relief. The therapy itself is relatively painless and consists of a patient lying face-up on a therapy table with their torso and pelvis wrapped and attached to a mechanical pulley.

This device produces a slight pull and gentle separation of the joints of the spine. It also produces a negative vacuum affect to the discs of the spine, which literally pulls the bulge or herniation back into the disc and reduces any pressure on the nerves of the spine or spinal cord.

Physical Medicine Specialists can use spinal decompression therapy to treat illnesses like facet joint syndrome, herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, and sciatica. These are the basic areas that appear in spinal disorders or chronic back pain. However, there are other types of spinal disorders and chronic back pain syndromes that can benefit from the use of decompression therapy, but require the recommendation of a physical medicine specialist.
